Cool, eh?
Tree Lilacs
Syringa reticulata
All of these are cultivars of Syringa reticulata -- Japanese Tree Lilac. These are produced by grafting, not propagated from cuttings. The color selection is small. Any color you want as long as it's white.
Tree lilacs in early summer are covered in big irregular clumps of white or off white flowers. Typically they grow 20 to 25 feet tall by about 3/4 of that wide.
All tree lilacs are special order.
We can usally get
- Ivory Silk (zone 2b) This one is the most common in the industry. 25 feet tall by 20 wide in a upright oval
- Ivory Pillar (zone 2b) Pillar is a bit of an exageration. Nominally 25 feet tall by 15 wide. Tends to a more pyramidal shape.
- Golden Eclipse (zone 3b) This one has gold and green varigated foliage. Should do well in Edmonton. Needs some protection in rural sites. 20 feet tall by 12 feet wide. Personally I’m not fond of variagated leaves where the varigation is muddy. Eclipse is more of a greeny white and green leave. All the pix I’ve seen ‘golden’ is exagerated.
January 2020: I can get Ivory Silk -- special order. 1.5” caliper in a #15 pot would be $180. Some smaller ones too. Write to me.
