Linden flowers with bee
Habitat
- Prefer moist fertile soils.
- Do best with regular watering, light fertilizing, and yearly aeration under the crown and 10 feet beyond.
Take a couple of years to set down root after transplanting
Sites that are not suitable for Lindens include the heavy soils that become compacted by urban activity, sand/gravel soils that do not retain moisture or fertilizer, locations where winter salt spray is prevalent and highly exposed areas where wind and sun penetrate the tree. Lindens have the potential to be used more extensively as a landscape tree throughout the prairies. They are becoming more available and can serve as an alternative to the widely used ash.
This is not a plant and forget tree.
If you are in the Aspen Parkland region, any of these will do will given the above care. As you get further south and west into drier more alkaline soils, the first two do better than the others.
