This sugar maple has been growing underneath a poplar overstory now for several years. All the poplar have dropped their leaves. The willows in the background are getting ready to drop theirs. One of my dreams is to be able to provide sugar maple seedlings in bulk for rejuvenating poplar bush. Right now the trees are too expensive. Seed trees for prairie hardy trees aren't common.
Maples
A tree for all reasons
This is a diverse family, but they have a lot in common:
- All maples have two winged seeds joined together. These helicopter to earth in fall.
- All maples are shade tolerant. Most do better in full sun, but they will grow in shade. This makes them candidate trees for under planting in poplar groves to replace them.
- None of them do well in alkali soil. If your soil pH is above 7.5 (Any garden store has test kits) then you will need to amend the soil, or pick something else. Some maples need a soil pH of 6.5
- None have spectacular flowers, although some are interesting.
Size varies from Amur maple which can be easily used as a hedge shrub to Sugar maple which can reach heights of 70 feet, and similar widths.
We have split the maples into the following sections:
Utility maples
These are trees that can be gotten as seedlings in quantity at low prices. Good for shelterbelts, firewood, poplar bush rejuvenation.
- Manitoba Maple A fast growing tree that is uncertain about up. Non-maple looking leaf. Yellow in fall.
- Silver Maple Fastest growing maple that gets quite large. Goes dusty red to dishwater in fall.
- Amur Maple Very smalltree, seldom over 20 feet. Small leaves that go very red in fall. Can easily be pruned to a hedge.
Ornamental Maples
These usually come in as 7-9 foot trees. Many have good fall colour, or some other attribute that makes them stand out. You will find
- Lord Selkirk & Inferno Sugar Maples
- Autumn Spire Freeman Maple
- Prairie Rouge Red Maple
- Hot Wings Tatarian Maple
This is what I have on hand.
Inventory tables are double rows to make them usable on small screens.
Common name and container in column 1.
Count is how many we think we have left. Price is per tree.
Height will be there next year, we hope.
