Japanese Flowering Plum. It doesn’t produce fruit, but what a display! I bought this one a year ago, and planted in my demo garden. I get about 10 of these a year.
Shrub form Mustang Cherry Plum. (You saw this one at the bottom of the parent page in fall colour.) Cherry plums are a bit smaller than a ping pong ball, and taste wonderful. You need a Sapalta to keep it company.
Ornamentals, fruit trees, and bush fruit are different. Growing these from scratch takes time, and the demand isn’t big enough for any one type to make it worth while. (I figure that if I’m going to grow something from scratch then 300 is the smallest number to bother with.)
We bring larger trees in from Jeffries in Manitoba, figuring that anything that grows in Manitoba will think it’s on a Caribbean cruise here in Alberta. These are the Sugar Maples, Hawthorns, Apricots, Cherryplums, Flowering Crabapples, Cherries, Lindens, etc.
At the bottom I have a list of everything that we have 50 or fewer present, or on order. This list is very volatile. Get your dibs in early. (I’m including height in my inventory now, so this list will include some of the non fancy trees.)
We can get some of these in larger sizes for the impatient, but ask early.
I get asked “Can I get X as a seedling?” Most ornamentals and almost all fruit trees are grafted. I run into the following price structure:
- 7-8 foot tree $80
- 6-7 foot tree $75
- 5-6 foot tree $70
- 4-5 foot tree $65
You can probably see what’s happening: The price is getting the graft to take. After that they make a tiny difference in price to get rid of the smaller stock. Also: Most nurserymen realize that it won’t make much difference two years down the line, so the prices to me are only a couple of bucks different.
But I’ve found that a tree that people look UP at commands more respect. My solution: I get the largest tree that will be easy to transplant come fall for the unsold ones. My preferred destination pot is a 16” growbag, so most of this set comes in 11-13” pots.
So the answer usually is, “It’s not worth the bother.” Some exceptions exist. Trees produced by tissue culture instead of graft, haskaps,and romance cherries -- sometimes are available as seedlings for about $8 each. Inquire.
Because of the way my spreadsheet works, negative numbers show what has been sold already, positive numbers show what was ordered or is presently here. Material that is quoted on doesn't show up here. At any given time during spring I have $20K to $50 worth of quotes out in the wind.

- Once you have placed an order and made a deposit the price is guaranteed.
- All plant material subject to prior sale.
- In the event that inventory doesn't match reality due to miscounts, winter kill, animal damage, we will do our best to make good either with a rain cheque, substitution, or return of deposit.
- If you are not happy with the a product on seeing it, you may refuse it, and we will refund your deposit, generally by etransfer within a week.
