General Information about Trees
This list will have more general info about stuff. It's here because it helped me in my research for these pages. Many of these sites have helped me decide what trees to bring in and try to grow.
www.borealforest.org is an interesting site for information about the natural history of the boreal forest. While it's aimed at nothern Ontario, most of the species described either grow here, or should grow here with a bit of care. This site is responsibile for me ordering a box of eastern white cedar this spring. From a tree farmers perspective, the chunks on trees and on shrubs are the primary interest. This site is maintained by Lakehead University.
The British Columbia forestry department is a treasure trove of information. But it’s hard to find.
BC Forestry This is describes the 14 major zones in BC.

forestry.about.com covers characteristics of trees, fair number of pictures of trees, information about tree car, identification. It also has some very obnoxious blinking ads.
www.conifers.org titled as The Gymnosperm Database has more miscellaneous information about conifers than almost any other place I've been. The emphasis is on botany, but there are tidbits from many branches of knowledge here. If you want to find out specifics about a species, it's easier to use the google search bar than to find it by navigation, unless you know the tree classification system far better than I do.
[Silvics of North America][UFSSNA] is a two volume manual of forest trees. Lots of information about individual species, their natural range, methods of propagation, hybrids, habitat, plant associations. Gotta be a die hard tree fan for this one. As a resource it needs water. (rather dry...) Available either online (click on Table of contents) or you can download the entire thing as a pair of PDFs.
