The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you can see.

Winston Churchill

Sherwood's Soapbox

I look at the world and I wonder: Why is it so hard? The answer is staring you in the face. Then I remember:

"To every question there is an instantly obvious answer that is wrong.

To every problem there is an instantly obvious solution that won't work."

Anyway, as a means of solving the worlds problems, (and attracting traffic to my site), I have answers that seem to me like they would work, if not perfectly, then better than what we are doing now.

In some cases the idea is expensive to implement. If you want to protest along those lines, be ready with some numbers, at least on a back of the envelope type.

Most of these ideas are 'social engineering'. (Laura hates that term. Says it's manipulative. She's right.) SE is trying to bias people's decision making so they make a socially beneficial choice more of the time.

Speeding tickets are social engineering. So are tax writeoffs for charitable donations.

There are a lot of times when businesses would quite happily do things in a more responsible way, but it costs money. But if everyone has to do it that way, then no one is penalized.

Read, laugh, send me a line and tell me why each idea won't work. Convince me, and I'll issue a retraction, and grant you a kudo for correcting my ignorance.

Send email to soapbox@sherwoods-forests.com

Note, that unless you tell me otherwise in your letter, I may publish it, or quote it in a future rant
